Alzheimers disease and diabetes
Nearly 21 million Americans in the United States have diabetes, a disease that makes the body less able to convert sugar to energy More than 6 million of these people dont even know they have it Most people with diabetes have Type 2, which is linked to lack of exercise and being overweight When diabetes is not controlled, too much sugar remains in the blood Over time, this can damage organs, including the brain Scientists are finding more evidence that could link Type 2 diabetes with Alzheimers disease, the most common form of dementia and the seventh leading cause of death in the United States Several research studies following large groups over many years suggest that adults with Type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of later developing Alzheimers Alzheimers disease is a progressive and fatal brain disorder that gradually destroys a persons memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate and carry out daily activities As Alzheimers progresses, individuals may have changes in personality and behavior, such as anxiety, suspiciousness or agitation, as well as delusions

Managing Sick Days

November 2008

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International

Topics in Living with Type 1 Diabetes
JDRF has prepared the following tips to help you better manage sick days–but be sure to talk to your doctor as well These general guidelines will most likely need to be adjusted depending on the person with type 1 diabetes and the nature and severity of the illness Monitor blood sugar levels more frequently When you are under stress from illness or injury, your body releases hormones, which can cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, on the other hand, may result in extremely low blood sugar levels Since you cant be sure how an illness will affect blood sugar levels, it is important to check them often How often depends on the individual and the seriousness of the illness, but a general target is at least every two to three hours

The NDEP strongly encourages inviting a medical person health care provider or certified diabetes educator to participate in any sessions that you conduct to provide support for the discussion and to answer any specific medical questions that may arise

Background
Many people with diabetes use insulin to help keep their blood sugar blood glucose under control There are many myths about insulin use Some people think that a person has a worse kind of diabetes if he or she uses insulin Insulin is the fastest, most effective way for someone with very high blood sugar to get it down to a normal range Insulin alone or in combination with pills may be the best choice for many people with diabetes Yet many people are afraid to use insulin Why?

Objectives
1 To discuss what fears people have of using insulin 2 To discuss insulin myths versus realities 3 To describe what diabetes self-management means in terms of checking blood sugar, giving insulin, and problem solving

Time needed for discussion: 30 to 45 minutes without the optional section on glucose monitoring; 45 to 60 minutes if

Know Your Risk Factors

Diabetes
Insulin and Diabetes
Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy This happens because the hormone insulin converts sugar and other food into energy and helps glucose get into our bodies cells When you have diabetes, your body either doesnt make enough insulin or cant use its own insulin as well as it should, or both This causes sugars to build up too high in your blood

Types of Diabetes
This disease has two main forms: type 1 and type 2 Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, usually starts early in life It results from the bodys failure to produce insulin People with it must take insulin each day to regulate levels of blood glucose sugar Type 2 is the most common About 90 to 95 percent of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes It most often develops in middle-aged and older adults, and is often linked with obesity and physical inactivity Type 2 diabetes develops when the body doesnt make enough insulin and doesnt efficiently use the insulin it makes insulin resistance

Who Gets Diabetes
Diabetes is increasing This is because more people are obese, dont get enough physical activity and are

Over nine million women in the US have diabetes And three million of them dont even know it Did you know that? Diabetes increases the chances of having a heart attack or stroke Some women get diabetes when they are pregnant Women who have diabetes are more likely to have a miscarriage or a baby with birth defects What is diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that changes the way your body uses sugar The food you eat turns to sugar The sugar then travels through the blood to all parts of the body Usually, insulin helps get sugar from the blood to the bodys cells, where it is used for energy When you have diabetes, your body has trouble making and/or responding to insulin So your body does not get the fuel it needs And your blood sugar stays too high What are the types of diabetes? Type 1–The body does not make any insulin People with type 1 must take insulin every day to stay alive Type 2–The body does not use insulin the way it should Most people with diabetes have type 2 Are you at risk for diabetes? Diabetes
Diabetes is the bodys inability to use insulin appropriately, according to the American Diabetes Association
In the US, 208 million people–or 7 percent of the population–have diabetes The cause is still a mystery but environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise as well as genetic factors play a part Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar It is a myth that may have developed from the fact that in the past people with diabetes were not allowed to have any sugar in their diets, which is no longer an acceptable practice by professionals All foods in moderation may be taken into account when planning the diet Emphasis should be placed on an increase in vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and lean meats in proportionate amounts People with diabetes may have to take one or more medications, including insulin Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune disorder in which specialized cells called beta cells are destroyed leading to diabetes symptoms In a nondiabetic, beta cells in the pancreas make insulin–a hormone that allows the body to use energy glucose from food While there currently isnt a cure for type 1 diabetes, there are several new
