What is Diabetes?
A group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose sugar
It results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both
Insulin is a hormone that is needed to get glucose into the cells of the
body for energy

Did you Know?

Approximately 27 million or 114 of all African Americans aged 20
years or older have diabetes

You may have diabetes and not know it

Heart disease and stroke affect people with diabetes twice as often as
they do others without diabetes

Diabetes is the 5th deadliest disease in the United States

African Americans are 16 times more likely to have diabetes than non-
Latino whites

One in four African American women over 55 years of age has diabetes

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure African Americans
with diabetes are 26 to 56 times more likely to suffer from kidney
disease
Diabetes is the most common cause of non-injury lower limb
amputations African Americans are 15 to 25 times more likely to
suffer from lower limb amputations
Strokes and Heart Disease: People with diabetes are five times more
likely to suffer strokes and once having had a stroke, are two to four
times as likely to have another stroke
Blindness: African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from
diabetes-related blindness
Diabetes can also lead to nerve problems neuropathy

Type 1 Diabetes

Often referred to juvenile-onset diabetes

Accounts for only 5-10 of cases

Type 2 Diabetes

Often called adult-onset diabetes; and gestational diabetes, which
affects pregnant women

Accounts for 90-95 of all cases and has the most devastating impact
on African Americans

Genetics: Diabetes tends to run in the
family

Obesity/Being Overweight

Having higher than normal blood glucose Sugar Levels

Gestational Diabetes: Many women have high blood sugar during
pregnancy, which returns to normal after childbirth This can later
turn into type 2 diabetes

Lack of exercise/physical activity

How to Control/Prevent Diabetes

Make Healthy Food Choices: fruits, vegetables, lean cut meats, low-fat
cheeses, etc
