The Web Provides Support and Resources for all types of People with Diabetes
Support groups are a great way to meet other people who struggle with the same things that you do For the person with diabetes, these struggles include blood sugars, medications, depression, family, the workplace, and almost every other aspect of their lives Despite the benefits of attending a support group, many people do not attend due to busy schedules, inconvenient locations and meeting times, or the anxiety of meeting new people The internet provides a place of support on the users terms and without the anxiety Online Forums Elizabeth Zabell was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2005 Despite a great network of support provided by her family and friends, Elizabeth longed to interact with those who knew the struggles and changes her diagnosis brought That same year, Elizabeth also met David Edelman, a web designer and now her husband Together they launched Diabetes Daily in December 2005 Diabetes Daily is an online forum where

people with diabetes can connect via forum posts, read diabetes related news and follow their favorite blogs The forums provide the type of support that Elizabeth wanted to 1,250 visitors daily Visit wwwdiabetesdailycom today Weblogs, or
blogs for short, are set up much like a diary, with dated entries ordered chronologically Unlike a diary, however, they are used to share information and interact with an online audience There are millions of blogs on the internet covering a wide range of topics including sports, religion, politics and health A small number of these blogs are written about life with diabetes by authors with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, parents of children with diabetes, spouses, young and old, and from all over the world–all held together by diabetes Allison Blass, a type 1 diabetic and blogger wwwlemonlemonadecom, created a website that catalogues and sorts close to 200 blogs along with information about their authors For many, blogging is a way to share their experience with diabetes–both receiving and giving support Check out the blogs at wwwdiabetesocblogspotcom You wont regret taking the time to check out these resources that are right at your fingertips It is important to remember, however, that the majority of the blogs and users who post at online forums are not medical professionals Any serious concerns about your diabetes management should be directed to your medical team Online
forums, blogs, and the internet are great sources of emotional support, but safety should be considered where your physical well-being is concerned More Noteworthy Sites: Kerri Morrone: RI native, writer, type 1 diabetic http://wwwsixuntilmecom Sandra: Mom of an 11 year old boy with type 1 diabetes http://wwwartistmom2twoblogspotcom Rachel: Cat lover, wife, type 2 diabetic http://wwwrachel76blogspotcom/ TuDiabetes-A Social Networking Site http://wwwtudiabetescom Joslin Diabetes Center Discussion Boards http://wwwjoslinorg/JoslinDiscussionBoardsasp

work at the DAI inspired me to learn more and do more to control my diabetes To
ready myself for our Move, Lose, Prevent Diabetes program at Lightolier, I began my own nine week intervention to learn what healthy eating means and incorporating an exercise regiment I had no problem asking the trainers at the gym for advice I started walking 2-3 miles a day, sitting on a ball in my office that strengthens your core and attending the gym at least 3 days a week to do aerobics and weight training In the beginning of my nine weeks I lost 1-2 pounds a week Then I plateaued- but I never gave up Every week was a challenge, especially the weekends I knew this by my log book where I wrote down everything-EVERYTHING-I ate and recorded every moment of activity Weekdays were easiest During the week I had a schedule I was up early eating breakfast, doing my mile walk by walking my dog, making my lunch and snacks But when the weekend came it was difficult I was not up early at 5:30am walking the dog and eating my breakfast Instead I was up at 7:30 am and was trying to get my chores around the house done I was eating later and maybe walking the dog or NOT What helped keep me focused during this time was the knowledge that I would be helping someone to improve their health,
lose weight or learn how to eat healthier by being their peer coach This was my motivation along with wanting to fit into those pants You know those pants I became even more motivated when others would tell me Ginny, you look great You have lost weight There were those one pair of pants that you know you have not worn because you cannot fit into them and you use them as a goal setter Then comes that one day you put them on and you get them over your hips hooray but you cannot quite zip them up yet You continue to strive for your goal Dont get me wrong, there are days you will SLIP but you get right back up and dust yourself off and return to your plan Then comes the day you put those pants on and not only do they fit you have a little extra room Hip Hip Hooray You feel like you can achieve anything Then you set another goal if that is your choice or begin your maintenance for life This was how I was able to bring my experience to the 23 employees who participated in the Move, Lose, Prevent Diabetes I am happy to report that the group of employees along with me have lost a total of 89 lbs within the nine weeks of Move, Lose Prevent Diabetes

Volunteer Spotlight
Brad Deborah Rebello
by Bill DaPonte

This editions DAI volunteer spotlight shines on Brad and Deborah Rebello of Westport, MA Brad and Deb, along with their daughter Amanda and son, Travis, have been members of the DAI family since Amanda was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1993 at the age of five Brad and Deb sought support from the DAI and soon Amanda was participating in our Youth Support groups, holiday parties, and most importantly, summer day camp, at that time called Camp EDI, Soon her younger brother Travis joined her at camp and soon the Rebellos became active members of the Association In fact, Amanda, now 19 years old, has been a part of our camping program for the last 14 years First as a camper, then, wanting to share her experiences and talents with younger campers, she became a Junior Counselor, a Counselor and last year served as our Nature Program Leader She has also served as our youth spokesperson, appearing with local politicians and appearing on our United Way Posters to help draw awareness to the DAIs mission Not to be outdone, Deb began volunteering her time and talents with us by helping out at various youth events and
answering the call when asked to serve on our Board of Directors In 2001, Brad and Deb, both classic car enthusiasts and members of the Downshifters Classic Car Club, held a classic car show to benefit Camp Kyle The event was an instant hit and a fun way to raise money When participants began asking if there would be more shows, the Rebellos decided to make it an annual event Over the next five years the event began to draw more and more participants and a larger venue was needed Brad, who works for the Stop Shop companies, approached them with the idea of using their new facility in Freetown Brad not only succeeded in getting them to agree to let him hold the show in their parking lots but convinced Stop Shop to sponsor the entire event Last September, Brad and Deb proudly presented the DAI with a check for 5000 to benefit Camp Kyle This years event is set to take place on Sunday, September 9 and will once again be at the Stop Shop in Freetown Please join us for a great time The DAI family salutes the entire Rebello family for all of their dedication and help throughout the years Thank you for all that you do

Summer Eating Tips for People With Diabetes
Anne K Blocker, RD/LD, CDE Summer activities are in full swing with ball games in the park, family reunions and vacations The warm weather draws us to the great outdoors for fun as well as mealtimes Picnics, potlucks, sack lunches and travel meals are a part of our summer routine that can sometimes make blood glucose
harder to manage Here are some suggestions for maintaining a healthy nutrition program this summer Avoid going to picnics and parties overly hungry–this may tempt you to overeat Eat a small snack before you go if serving time might be delayed Attempt to stick to a meal and snack schedule to keep your blood sugar, energy and moods stable If you are traveling, pack a cooler for a better selection of foods instead of being limited to the choices at convenience stores and roadside restaurants Prepare meals that are balanced to sustain your energy Eat adequate lean protein or other protein-rich dishes to keep you fuller longer along with healthy carbohydrates from starchy vegetables, including corn and peas Or choose fresh fruits such as melon wedges and grape clusters or make mixed fruit kabobs Enjoy fresh vegetables with your favorite seasoning or a relish tray with a yogurt-based dip, as well as vegetable salads with healthful dressings Stay well hydrated Summer heat can cause dehydration, which leads to increased hunger because your body seeks fluid from foods, increased blood glucose levels, headache and fatigue Keep plenty of water and low-calorie drinks on hand so you wont be
tempted to quench your thirst with sweetened drinks laden with unwanted carbs and empty calories You may need to bring your own liquid refreshments when away from home Limit high-sodium foods like hotdogs and chips, which can cause water retention and affect your blood pressure Try grilled chicken breast or turkey tenders without a bun to limit the carbs and serve vegetables on the side Keep food stored at safe temperatures to avoid food-related gastrointestinal illnesses that can ruin your day and upset your diabetes control Keep Your Blood Glucose In the Ball Park Pack your glucose meter in the picnic basket and treat it with special care in hot weather Store your meter out of direct sunlight Extreme heat or cold can cause meter malfunction Keep insulin refrigerated or at least no warmer than 86F, as insulin can be damaged by heat and will no longer be effective Consider storing insulin in a cooler when youre traveling or at a picnic, but be careful not to let it freeze, as that also will destroy it And Dont Forget– Maintain your walking or other exercise program during the summer months, but be sure to exercise safely in hot temperatures Remember to protect your skin from the
suns rays and to stay well hydrated Carry a first aid kit so youll be prepared for cuts, scrapes, blisters or potential emergencies Have a great summer, and enjoy sun-filled days along with tasty, healthful, safe summer foods
