National Kidney Foundation of Illinois Applauds Gov Blagojevich for
Illinois Leadership Role in CKD Prevention
SB1461 Directs the Illinois Department of Public Health to Establish a
Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness, Testing, Diagnosis and Treatment Program
One in nine adults has chronic kidney disease CKD - more than 20
million Americans
The two primary causes of CKD are untreated hypertension and diabetes
Together, they represent approximately 70 of new CKD cases every year
CHICAGO — The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois NKFI today
applauded Gov Rod Blagojevich for his signature of SB1461, which directs
the Illinois Department of Public Health to establish a chronic kidney
disease awareness, testing, diagnosis and treatment
program NKFI also
acknowledged the leadership role of Illinois State Sen Donne E Trotter
for creating the legislation and work for its passage in the Illinois
General Assembly
CKD remains a relatively unknown and silent disease even though it
leads to a devastating conclusion: dialysis and coronary complications
The fact is that most patients are diagnosed with CKD in the latest stage,
which requires dialysis because their hypertension and diabetes have gone
undetected, said Willa Lang, NKFI executive director This piece of
legislation is a critical step in making CKD prevention a priority in the
states urban and rural communities
Later this year, NKFI will roll out the nations only traveling Kidney
Mobile NKFIs prevention campaign will educate high-risk individuals and
primary health care providers on CKD prevention and provide education
programs for successfully managing diabetes and hypertension - the two
leading causes of kidney disease
NKFIs Kidney Mobile will travel across the state, providing
screenings, prevention programs and educational materials to communities in
the greatest need At each of the events, NKFI Kidney Mobile staff will
work directly
with individuals who may not have access to routine
healthcare and with the local primary health care providers who provide the
front-line treatment for successfully managing diabetes and hypertension,
and with nephrologists and endocrinologists who treat CKD patients
NKFI plans to collaborate closely with federally funded health care
centers to reach the greatest number of communities as the Kidney Mobile
travels the state, especially targeting African-American and Latino
communities These populations are at the greatest risk for developing
kidney disease because of undetected or untreated diabetes and
hypertension The Kidney Mobile is focused on bringing tools and resources
to the primary health care community as it rolls across the state to
empower them in their prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease
The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois provides preveniont programs,
educational services and materials for Illinois patients, transplant
recipients and communities, as well as funding for medical research NKFI
is also committed to increasing the availability of all organs for
transplantation through school,
corporate, and community organ donor
awareness programs and legislative initiatives
