Southampton Hospital Diabetes Program Earns Accreditation and Invites Public to Learn More
The community is invited to meet Southampton Hospitals Diabetes Team and learn more about treatment and prevention of diabetes on Monday, March 26, in the hospital lobby Diabetes and cardio/ pulmonary experts will be on hand from 8 am to 2 pm to answer questions and provide information concerning this disease, which is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States The Diabetes: Basics Beyond program has earned Southampton Hospital accreditation by the American Diabetes Association and is one of only 600 educational programs in the country so recognized by the ADA According to Judy OConnell, RN/NP/CDE, director of the special diabetes program, the accreditation assures patients that our diabetes program meets specific national standards of care The Basics Beyond team philosophy stresses Meals, Meds, Monitoring, Management and Motion, she says, and controlling these can go a long way toward helping a person with diabetes lead a normal life Participating staff includes Ms OConnell; Sandy Alfano, RD/CDE; Jessica Swiatocha, RN, NP-C, MSN; Peggy

ACSM, RCEP, MA; and Kathy Malfitani, RN, BSN Anyone with diabetes, pre-diabetes or with significant risk factors for the disease is welcome to come in to pick up related health information and to learn about the variety of maintenance and prevention programs available through the hospital The major risk factors are a family history of diabetes, giving birth to a baby that weighs more than nine pounds, a history of gestational diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight Anyone who is interested but unable to attend on March 26 can contact Ms OConnell at 6317268916 for information on the program and on the Diabetes Club, which meets every third Thursday of the month at Parrish Memorial Hall; the Club is open to anyone who has diabetes or has questions about it
