Story Description: In this months Annals of Internal Medicine report we
look at two key studies A look at coffee drinking and mortality and a
connection between diabetes and hearing loss
There is good news for coffee drinkers A new study published in Annals of
Internal Medicine found that regular coffee drinking up to 6 cups per day
is not associated with increased deaths in either men or women In fact,
both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption is associated with a
somewhat smaller rate of death from heart disease The study looked at data
on more than 84-thousand women between 1980 and 2004 and nearly 42-thousand
men between 1986 and 2004 to examine the relationships between coffee
drinking and risks for dying from heart disease, cancer, or any cause
The study found that women consuming two to three cups of caffeinated
coffee per day had a 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease and
an 18 percent lower risk of death caused by something other than cancer or
heart disease as compared with non-consumers during follow-up In this
report
youll hear from one of the studys authors, Rob van Dam, PhD of the
Harvard Medical School Plus B-Roll of coffee and coffee drinkers
The second study focuses on the link between diabetes and hearing
impairment Here researchers found a link between the two and suggest that
diabetes patients may want to have their hearing screened The study found
that 28 percent of people with diabetes had hearing impairment in the lower
mid frequency range 68 percent of people with diabetes had hearing
impairment when we look in the high frequency range In this report youll
hear from the lead study author, Kathleen Bainbridge, PhD plus Laura
Baldwin, a woman who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 30, then suffered
hearing impairment several years later There is also B-Roll of hearing
screening, a glucose monitor and hearing aids

|Rob van Dam, PhD |3 Rob van Dam, PhD:
The bottom |
|Study Author |line of this study is even drinking |
| |a lot of coffee, like up to six cups|
| |a day, of coffee per day, doesnt |
| |affect your mortality over the long |
| |run So its a good indicator that |
| |high coffee consumption is not |
| |detrimental for overall health |
| |4 Announcer: According to the |
| |study, women who drank two to three |
| |cups of caffeinated coffee had a 25 |
| |percent lower risk of death from |
| |heart disease Overall, the study |
| |looked at more than 84-thousand |

| |nearly 42-thousand men between 1986 |
| |and 2004 to
examine the |
| |relationships between coffee |

| | |
| |5 Rob van Dam, PhD: Here we are |
| |talking about middle aged people |
| |around their 40s and 50s And then |
| |we followed them up for about 20 |
| |years So from middle age to older |
| |age and see who dies in that, that |
| |time period Who dies prematurely |
| |and who survived So indeed, people|
| |who drank more coffee, like up to |
| |for to five or six cups a day |
| |compared to people who didnt drink |
| |any
coffee, they were not more |
| |likely to die of any cause or |
| |cardiovascular causes or cancer |

The key finding of our study is that, that coffee is not gonna hurt you Uh
if you dont have any specific conditions, drinking four or five, five cups
of coffee per day, it,
it will be detrimental and it, if you want to
improve your health uh you can focus on other uh healthy lifestyles
Quitting smoking, uh being more active, uh having a healthy diet full of
fruits and vegetables and whole grains
If people think of coffee they, they definitely think of caffeine But
coffee is much more than that, its a plant food, derived from plants, and
its hundreds and hundreds of plant components And some of these plant
components have very interesting health effects, uh for example, they have
anti-oxidant effects, uh, which may be beneficial for, for chronic
diseases

|

| |Institutes of Health explains |
|Kathleen Bainbridge, PhD |2 Kathleen Bainbridge, PhD: Our |
|Study Author |study found that 28 percent of |
| |people with diabetes had hearing |
| |impairment when we looked in the |
| |lower mid frequency range And 68 |
| |percent of people with diabetes had |
| |hearing impairment when we look in |
| |the high frequency range These are|
| |very high numbers, twice the numbers|
| |that we see when we look among |
| |people without diabetes And |
|
|because the occurrence of hearing |
| |impairment is so high among people |
| |with diabetes, it might make sense |
| |to offer hearing tests to people |
| |with diabetes |
| |3 Announcer: More than 51-hundred|
| |adults between the ages of 20 and 69|
| |participated in the study Hearing |
| |impairment was found to be more |
| |prevalent among adults with |
| |diabetes 41-year old Laura Baldwin |
| |is a diabetic who is also hearing |
| |impaired |
|Laura Baldwin |4 Laura Baldwin: I have had |
|Diabetes Patient |diabetes for eleven years and |
| |started experiencing hearing loss |
|
|about three years ago, but never |
| |made any connection that there was |
| |any relationship between the |
| |diabetes and the hearing loss |
| |5 Announcer: Researchers say the |
| |studys results justify hearing |
| |screening for people with diabetes |
| |6 Kathleen Bainbridge, PhD: We |
| |know that elevated blood sugar |
| |levels can cause damage to the small|
| |blood vessels, and to the nerves |
| |among people with diabetes And we |
| |thought it might make sense that the|

| |affected |

The link between diabetes and hearing impairment has been debated for some
time, but prior studies were inconclusive This study, which was funded by
the National Institutes of Health, examines this relationship on a national
level, and we found a very consistent relationship among these two
conditions
There were over five thousand people who participated in this survey They
attended a mobile clinic, um, where they were setup in, like, the local
mall, and people would come, and, um, have interview- be interviewed, and
have their hearing tested

| |coffee frequently, even up to six
|
| |cups a day was not associated with |
| |any increase in risk of mortality |
| |either all cause mortality or |
| |cardiovascular mortality, or cancer |
