Diabetes: Center Stage
Diabetes, a lifelong disease, is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country Approximately 182 million Americans have the disease, 63 of the US population While a third are aware that they have it, another one-third or 52 million are completely unaware that they have diabetes An additional 20 million people have pre-diabetes As yet, there is no cure People with diabetes need to manage their disease carefully to stay healthy It is a challenge for the rest of their lives The Diabetes Association of Pierce County, a non-profit volunteer agency, is sponsoring Tacoma area workshops and a special event in Seattle All workshops are open to the general public

The annual Puget Sound Caregiver Conference is scheduled for Monday, June 7, at the Tukwila Community Center, 9:00 am 4:00 pm The cost is 25 for family and volunteer caregivers; 50 for agency-based caregivers The event is coordinated by the Aging and Disability Services Administration with the support of local counties, service providers and organizations The keynote speaker this year is Dr Rita Bresnahan, an expert on aging and caregiving Many health and caregiver professionals from the area will provide a number of excellent workshops including: Strategies to manage challenging behaviors, Coping with grief, anger, and stress, Getting the most out of a doctors visit, Legal and financial planning
