The American Diabetes Association
Seeks Applicants for the
ADA - Novo Nordisk Legal Advocacy Fellowship
The American Diabetes Association ADA seeks a lawyer for a two-year
fellowship fighting discrimination against people with diabetes in the
workplace, at school and child care centers, in correctional institutions
and police conduct, and in places of public accommodation
Discrimination against people with diabetes is often based on ignorance or
on unfounded fears about the disease ADAs legal advocacy program uses a
four-step approach: educate, negotiate, litigate, and legislate to combat
discrimination We work with a network of over 400 lawyers, the top
diabetes health care professionals from around the country, other
disability rights, civil rights, and health care professional
organizations, and government agencies Together we develop educational
materials, negotiate standards for fair treatment of people with diabetes,
bring federal and state lawsuits and administrative actions, and change
unfair state and federal laws This combination of tactics has given the
Association the flexibility it needs to
develop successful campaigns to
combat discrimination and will enable the ADA - Novo Nordisk Legal Advocacy
Fellow to gain broad experience on methods of impacting social change
through legal work - as well as the opportunity to work with lawyers who
practice in a wide variety of legal settings
The Fellow will provide information and resources to workers, families of
school children, inmates and their families, and others - and will work
with them to develop strategies to combat discrimination The Fellow will
also work on ongoing major projects including ADAs Safe at School Campaign
and the National Diabetes Prison Coalition The goal of the Safe at School
Campaign is for all students with diabetes to be medically safe at school
and to have the same educational opportunities as their peers The
National Diabetes Prison Coalition combines the efforts of ADA, Southern
Poverty Law Center, ACLU, and others to improve the deplorable lack of
access to diabetes care in jails and prisons
