PREVENTING TYPE 2 DIABETES: A REALISTIC GOAL

The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is currently increasing and is reaching epidemic proportions Recent population-based surveys in which blood glucose tests were done show that Diabetes now affects at least 8 of people over age 20, 12 between 40 and 74, and 19 aged 75 or over Moreover, about 35 of identified people with Type 2 Diabetes were unaware that they had diabetes prior to being tested Why is it important to identify the condition as early as possible? Those people who have Diabetes have a high risk of developing blindness, renal failure kidney disease, amputation, heart attack, stroke and the risk of cardiovascular death Ideally, the best approach to the Diabetic epidemic would be to prevent it from developing in the first place This now seems possible and is particularly relevant to high-risk individuals Who then is at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes? Individuals with any of the following risk factors: Age 30 or over with a history of Diabetes in the family Being overweight Have high blood pressure Have given birth to a baby over 9 lb Had Diabetes
during pregnancy Have ever been told that their blood sugar is high Have a condition called impaired glucose tolerance Are of Aboriginal, Latin American, African, Asian or Hispanic descent
