CPR Training
Need to know when everyone is available It is
in Oakland and we would need
to take the bus there We need at least 25 people to sign up Then
depending on how well you do with the training, you can go forward and be
certified and you can charge to train others Our training will be at not
cost because we will be Red Cross Volunteers so the CPR training is free
DULCE-guest speakers
How many know about DULCE? Lets hear the guest speakers
DULCE was establishd in 2001, the founder was a CHE Co-Chair and it is a
diabetes health awareness program It was created through CHE Students
wanted to come together because diabetes is a health issue that affects our
Latino community in which they would go and educate the community
Dont forget DULCE offers a diabetes decal
The point of bringing in DULCE is to let you guys see that the groups that
you will be working on in Spring so that you can see how you can go about
to start your groups
Events include Childrens hospital in Oakland, blood glucose testing, St
Josephs the Worker health fair where they had sugar presentations These
presentations let population know how much sugar are present in daily
foods The Oakland health fairs in 2006 and 2007 were a great success as
well
Why
diabetes?
Each DULCE member had a moment to share about his or her involvement with
DULCE:
Toni Vetran- was in CHE when idea first came up about DULCE Was brought up
in 2000 and took 1 year to get launched Many people were excited and kept
at it She joined it when she came back to school 2004 because she was
amazed at how much it progressed DULCE is very fun It is very time
consuming because there is soo much need Toni and Juan are creating a day-
laborer project and will be looking for interns yea it will be available
to all of you CHE members Joined because saw need in community
Gricelda- diabetes affected her family at a great extent It is a lot of
work but since she is doing it with passion, it doesnt seem like a lot of
work It is a very huge learning experience Can use diabetes as a template
and do other health issues
Elizabeth-3rd year was a decal student and then became a part of DULCE in a
greater way Was talking to someone at a health fair and saw the impact
when they were educating the community about basic health Also, her aunt
had gestational diabetes and saw the bad side of diabetes and thats why
became part of DULCE Loves how DULCE is very proactive and hopes it
will
inspire you in doing something in your community Being part of DULCE she
feels she is taking part of it is contributing to the solution of the
problem
Juan Magana- 5th year Was in DULCE in 2005 Abby Rincon told her about CHE
and then was introduced to DULCE He took the decal and then after being at
a CHE health fair for Cinco de Mayo and brought the day laborers that were
at the corner and brought them to the health fair They did not care about
a health fair and about diabetes so he picked up the information packets
and brought the information to them He decided that day that this was not
right and thus has aimed to create an internship to where they work with
day laborers at a weekly basis His and Tonis efforts are to get this
internship going
Edith Bretado- took decal in Spring 2005 and got interested in doing DULCE
because she was shocked how many high schoolers did not know about
diabetes Hopefully, when you guys start your own group, you guys will go
and educate the community
Cecilia- took decal last spring and joined DULCE Experience so far has
been to get familiarized with the program She has been more of an
observant because one day she hoped to be as good of an
educator as the
coordinators in DULCE
Joel Gonzalez- finance coordinator for DULCE Joined DULCE because many of
his family members are overweight and wanted to find out more information
as to the long-term health effects It is very devastating and that is why
he wanted to do something about it
Oscar Davila- has been in DULCE for a year and a half and wanted to be the
Co-Chair in CHE and wanted to help you create your own groups and/or
projects as well We are not doctors or experts, we are just students
wanting to educate our community He would like for you to spread the
information on issues that interest you
For the remainder of the meeting, the students were broken up into groups
depending on what groups they were interested in
Obesity
Diet and exercise
Womens health
Mental health
Health Reform/insurance
Alternative practices
