State law now requires diabetes screening to be completed on all school physicals K, 1, 5, 9, Pre-K or other programs offered through the schools Diabetes testing eg fasting plasma glucose or 2 hour glucose tolerance test is not required Although the law requiring diabetes risk assessment has been in effect, it will not be fully enforced until Fall 2006 Your school should not be cited if an audit of your records during the 2005-06 school year finds diabetes risk assessment was not completed on all physicals The old form Certificate of Child Health Examination may be used and accepted by schools for the Fall 2005 school year However by Fall 2006, students requiring school physicals must have diabetes screening as part of their school physical completed by an appropriate health care professional and that diabetes screening must be documented on the new Certificate of Child Health Examination form The delay in enforcement is due to the length of time necessary for the rules to be written and approved and the time needed for approval of modifications to the
child health examination form by Departments of Public Health and Human Services and distribution of the form to schools and health care providers
