Living with diabetes, or any chronic condition, is not easy Taking control begins with education and motivation Because you are your own best expert, you have an important role in managing your disease with your health-care provider By pursuing active self-management, you can control your diabetes, instead of feeling as if it controls you Accept that self-management is a path that is sometimes flat and smooth and other times bumpy Try small experiments to learn the
benefits of changing a behavior For example, note the effect of a daily walk on blood glucose levels Taking baby steps in controlling your diabetes will result in a big leap in living well Diabetes is a progressive illness, requiring re-assessment of your treatment plan on a regular basis Medication change or starting insulin does not indicate a failure of the person with diabetes; but rather a new strategy to improve control Consider talking to your health-care provider or educator about creating an action plan for your diabetes Remember a healthy diabetes lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle for everyone Encourage your friends and family to join you in living a healthy lifestyle
