US Kids Have Shorter Life Expectancy Than Parents Because of Obesity
Children today have a shorter life expectancy than their parents for the
first time in one hundred years because of the epidemic of obesity,
according to Dr William Klish, professor of pediatrics and head of
pediatric gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine
We are in the middle of an epidemic that may have profound health effects
on our children, as well as us, said Klish If society does not act now
to implement preventative measures, the increase of obesity will not stop
Klish, along with Dr William Wong, research scientist at Childrens
Nutrition Research Center and professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of
Medicine, conducted a study in Houston, the fourth largest school district
in the US, and found 37 percent of children were overweight with the
number rising
Being overweight or obese is linked closely to heart disease,
hypertension, liver disease, certain cancers and diabetes, said Klish
Type 2 diabetes once was considered an adult disease; however, because
more kids are overweight, the incidence of the disease has increased
dramatically
in children and adolescents
The percentage of children and adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
at Texas Childrens Hospital has increased from less than 1 percent 20
years ago to 27 percent in 2002
