Dear Family and Friends:
Each year Spring brings new life Flowers bloom, leaves begin to bud on
the trees and the grass starts to turn green But since 1997, spring has
meant our participation in the Walk to Cure Diabetes, which, one day, we
hope brings new life to Jane

The following is a note of thanks that Jane wrote for her elementary
schools weekly newsletter following a bake sale fundraiser for JDRF:

How It Feels

Have you ever felt like you are trapped in
a bubble? Well thats how
I feel It is hard to go to a party or to a sleep over and not be
able to eat cake or candy It is painful to prick my finger every day
and take 2 shots I am grateful for my friends and family who have
guided me through this terrible disease I cant thank my teachers
enough, especially Mrs Smith She has given me strength and helped
me hold in my tears She has given me food when I have low blood
sugar and even bought food from the snack machine for me because of
this Also, Ms Jones She is helping with the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation Walk for the Cure and has donated a lot of time to
it Once again, thanks for your support

For the first time since Jane was diagnosed, she has expressed some of her
feelings publicly As everyone knows, she is reserved and a bit shy It
took great courage for her to share her feelings with the entire school and
now with all of you

On Sunday, May 7, Team Jane will once again, Walk to Cure Diabetes along
with thousands of others who want to change not only Janes life, but that
of all diabetics Please help us find the cure by sponsoring Jane with
a
donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation No matter how small
or large, every penny and dollar makes a difference

We have enclosed a pre-addressed envelope for you If you wish to write a
check, it should be made payable to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
You can also visit our teams web site at
http://walkjdrforg/indexcfm?fuseactionextranetpersonalpageconfirmid85

Thank you very much for your love and support Together we will find a
cure and the annual Walk will not be necessary in the future

With great Appreciation,

Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors,

We are writing to you about a worthwhile community event: the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations May 7, 2006, Walk To Cure Diabetes
As you may know, our son, Tommy Smith, was
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes a
year and a half ago shortly after his 13th birthday This illness can, and
did strike with little warning Tommy now has to test his blood at least 4
to 6 times a day, inject insulin at least 4 times a day, and count every
calorie of food that he eats Tommy will need to deal with this illness
every day of his life, for the rest of his life, unless a cure is found
And that is why we are asking you for your help

In the eighteen months that we have been coping with this disease, we
have learned that:

Eighty seven cents 087 of every dollar raised for JDRF goes directly
to its core mission-finding a cure for juvenile diabetes
35 children are diagnosed every day with Type 1 juvenile diabetes
Insulin is a lifeline, not a cure for diabetes
Children with Type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin every day of
their lives unless a cure is found
The average life expectancy of a Type 1 diabetic is generally reduced by
15 years
This country spends far fewer dollars on diabetes research than AIDS
research, cancer research, and Alzheimers research

We invite you to help us in one of two possible ways You may join
our family
team, known as Tommys Team, which consists of family and
friends who collect pledges and walk with us on May 7th in the Walk to Cure
Diabetes This three mile walk will take place on the National Mall in
Washington, DC, beginning at 3rd and Maryland Ave NW The walk will
begin at 9:00 A copy of the registration form is attached
Alternatively, you may send us a tax deductible contribution made
payable to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation any amount would be
greatly appreciated Our goal is to raise 8,000 and to have 50 walkers
this year
You may also register or donate on-line at our teams web site Visit
http://walkjdrforg and type Janes name in the box on the left-hand side

Thank you in advance for your generosity

Dear Family, Friends and Co-workers:

On Sunday, May 7, 2006, our family, friends and co-workers will be walking
in the Walk to Cure Diabetes on the grounds of the Washington Monument As
you may know, we have a most personal connection with this disease that
affects millions of children and adults Our nine-year-old daughter, Jane,
was diagnosed with Diabetes almost two years ago As a result, besides
closely monitoring her diet, Jane must test her blood sugar levels three to
four times a day and take insulin shots twice daily This equates to
approximately 1100 finger sticks and 730 shots in her legs and arms every
year And this will continue every year for the rest of her life unless a
cure is found

As you can imagine, this has forever changed all of our lives In our
attempt to encourage and support Jane, while educating those we know, we
have formed TEAM JANE in order to do two things; 1 raise money to support
the
research required to find a cure, and 2 to provide Jane with support
and let her know that she is not alone in her fight against Diabetes In
addition, the walk is one place where Jane does not feel alone with her
disease It has also taught her that she can do anything she wants

To accomplish our goal of trying to form a very large team to show our
support for Jane, we are actively recruiting anyone who would like to join
us on our team and raise money in support of Jane and the overall Walk for
the Cure

You can help in either or both of two ways:

1 Make a generous contribution in support of Team Jane cash or
Checks made out to JDRF, or visit our web site, listed above Any
amount is welcome
2 Come walk in support of Jane on May 7th and be an active
participant of Team Jane All we request is that you take a
Registration Form, collect just a little bit of money from folks
you know, including yourself, and then join us for a fun morning on
the Mall

Please know that over 80 of all money raised goes directly towards
Diabetes research

We greatly appreciate your
consideration and support of this most worthy
cause We look forward to having as many people as possible join us on May
7th Even if you cant join us on the walk, we appreciate any and all
donations made to Team Jane as part of our overall fund raising

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please dont
hesitate to call or write us Again, thank you from all of us for your
generous support of Jane

Very truly yours

Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors,

We are writing to you about a worthwhile community event: the Juvenile

1 Juvenile
diabetes They have to test their blood at least 5 to 8 times a day, inject
insulin at least 2 times a day, and count every gram of carbohydrates that
they eat To date, Jane has received over 2,730 insulin shots, and had her
fingers pricked over 8,190 times John has received over 1,760 insulin
shots, and had his fingers pricked over 5,280 times They will need to
deal with this illness every day of their lives, for the rest of their
lives, unless a cure is discovered And that is why we are asking for your
help

Over the past several years that we have been coping with this disease, we
have learned that:
More than 80 cents of every dollar raised for JDRF goes directly to

35 children are diagnosed every day with Type 1 diabetes
Over 5 million children, teens and adults are afflicted with Type 1
diabetes
Insulin is a lifeline, not a cure for diabetes Children with Type 1
diabetes need to take insulin every day of their lives without a cure
The average life expectancy of a Type 1 diabetic is generally reduced
by 15 years
Type 1 diabetes annually accounts for almost
100 billion in health
care costs in the US alone
Devastating life-limiting and life-shortening complications such as
blindness, amputation, heart disease and stroke, and kidney failure
are common side effects

We invite you to help us in one of three possible ways You may join our

A letter from a child who has diabetes:
Hi, Im John and I have diabetes I got it when I was little I was just
4 years old That means Ive had it almost as long as I didnt have it
I really dont want to have diabetes anymore

I cant wait until doctors and scientists find a cure Then I wont
have to say NO to cupcakes at parties while my friends eat as many as
they want I have to be very careful not to eat too many carbohydrates at
one time If I do, too much sugar gets into my blood and it makes me
tired, angry and hungry When there is a cure, I also wont have to carry
candy in my shoe in case my blood sugar goes too low If I dont eat
enough or if I exercise a lot, sometimes there is not enough sugar in my
blood When I go low I get really weak and shaky It feels really bad
and I could pass out if I dont eat something with sugar in it right away

When there is a cure, I will be able to sleep over at my
friends
houses and not have to have my parents come over to check my blood sugar at
night and give me a shot in the morning I cant imagine what it will be
like not to go low in school twice a week and worry about going low during
basketball, swimming and playing in the snow I cant imagine but I know
Ill like it

When scientists find a cure, I wont have to prick my finger four
times a day to test my blood sugar and take at least two shots of insulin a
day to control my blood sugar Sometimes the shots and the finger pricks
really hurt When there is a cure, I wont have to come inside for a snack
while the other kids keep playing and my parents wont have to ask me all
the time how my blood sugars are

We go to Washington every year for the Walk to Cure Diabetes to
raise money for scientists to use to find a cure When I was little, I
thought you got the cure at the end of the Walk to Cure Diabetes Now I
understand that they dont have a cure yet and research costs a lot of
money

Thats why I need your help I hope you can join my walk team -
Johns Jumpers - on Sunday, May 7, 2006, at Freedom Plaza in Washington
for
the Walk to Cure Diabetes If you can come walk, please call or e-mail
my mom or dad at - or johnsfam@emailcom Even if you cant
make it for the Walk, I hope you will send a contribution by May 6, 2005
to help us find a cure for me and other kids like me My web page can be

Dear Family and Friends,
Over the past 16 years, your care and generous support has helped MY
WALK TEAM raise more than 400,000 towards diabetes research While we are
getting closer to a cure everyday, we are not there yet As a result of
the tremendous funds raised by the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation,
doctors and scientists worldwide have made significant advances in diabetes
research
One of the most promising advances to come from diabetes research is
islet cell transplantation Islet cells, located in the pancreas, are
responsible for producing the hormone insulin, which metabolizes glucose in
the human body Successful islet cell transplantation has made it possible
for more than 300 people to stop taking insulin injections and live a
normal life Unfortunately, there are not enough islet cells to go around

There may, however, be a new source for islet cells It is now
believed that islet cells may be generated in a laboratory, eliminating the
need for human donors as the only source of islet cells With enough
funding, this can verified and islet cell cultivation may begin Millions
of people living with juvenile diabetes would then have the opportunity to
live a life free of insulin It is research like this that gives me hope
that my existence will not always be dependent on blood tests and insulin
injections
This year I am working harder than ever to reach my fundraising goal
I see it like this - the more money we raise to fund
diabetes research;
the sooner we reach our goal of finding a cure for this growing and
debilitating disease
Help me and my family with my mission to generously support the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in finding a cure for diabetes The
Capitol Chapters WALK TO CURE DIABETES will take place on Sunday, May 7,
2006 on the National Mall in Washington, DC Contributions may be made by

A letter from an adult walker who has diabetes:

Dear Family and Friends,

It is time again for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations Annual Walk
to Cure Diabetes Due to your wonderful love and support over the past 24
years, we have made a significant impact on the
fundraising efforts for
JDRF and you have made living with this disease so much more bearable
Thank you

The good news is that we are closer than ever to finding a cure for this
devastating disease This glimmer of hope lies in what researchers cal
Islet Transplantation In this procedure, islet cells which contain the
insulin-producing beta cells that have been destroyed with type 1 diabetes
are taken from a donors pancreas and transferred to a person with
diabetes, which allows the person to produce insulin
I cant even imagine for a second, what it would be like to live without
diabetes

It is amazing to think what an instrumental role JDRF has played in this
medical breakthrough In the last three years, more than 190 islet
transplants have been reported worldwide, about 100 with JDRF funding

There may be a light at the end of the tunnel All I know is that every
dollar you have ever donated or are willing to donate can contribute to the
end of this disease and the start of a whole new life

But before I break out the chocolate, there are many obstacles that remain
The shortage of available islets for transplantation is a tremendous
problem With the continued support of stem
cell research, I hope we can
overcome this Also, individuals receiving an islet transplant must remain
on a lifetime regimen of anti-rejection immunosuppressive drugs to prevent
their immune system from attacking the transplanted islets These drugs
may have potential serious long-term side effects, including the risk of
infections and certain types of cancer

So as you can see, now is as crucial a time as ever to support this amazing
research

The Walk to Cure Diabetes last year raised almost 1 million and my team
alone managed to raise 7,000 Please help the JDRF Capitol Chapter to
reach its goal of 1,000,000 You can support me by making a contribution
to JDRF, Janis Team by check enclosed is a return envelope or on-line
at http://walkjdrforg Just type my first and last name into the boxes
on the left, and you can see my personal fundraising web page

Thank you again for all of your love and support in the search for a CURE
for diabetes

A letter from a walker with no personal connection to diabetes:

January 1, 2006

Dear Friend,

My name is John Doe, and
for many of you, this is not the first letter you
have received from me For the past seven years I have participated in
fundraisers to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

This year will be no different, as there is still no cure for this
devastating disease and its complications Children and adults living with
diabetes must still prick their fingers multiple times daily to check their
blood sugar levels, and they must still give themselves multiple daily
insulin shots Thanks to the support of people like you, however, there
have been major strides towards finding that cure, as well as improving the
daily life of someone with diabetes But I will keep writing these letters
until there is a cure To help raise the much-needed funds to find a cure
for diabetes, I am participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundations annual Walk to Cure Diabetes which will be held on May 7,
2006 This year I will be participating in the Walk in honor of all of the
children who live with juvenile diabetes in the Washington, DC area

I am writing to you today with hopes that one day, these children and their
families will not have to
face what they do today My personal goal is to
exceed the 4,750 I was able to raise last year As an athlete and
concerned senior citizen, I would greatly appreciate your financial support
to fight this terrible disease Your contribution can help move us one step
closer to that cure

Enclosed please find a form for you to complete and return to me with your
contribution You can also visit http://walkjdrforg and type John Doe
in the search box to visit my personal web site Any amount that you can
give will help us move one-step closer to a cure for all of the children
and adults who suffer from juvenile diabetes

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1970 by parents of
children with diabetes who were convinced that through research, diabetes
could be cured Today approximately 16 million Americans have diabetes
Because insulin is not a cure, research is our only hope Every year
650,000 people suffer from the complications of this disease including
blindness, kidney disease, and amputation This year, JDRF will award
almost 100 million to diabetes research, bringing its cumulative dollar
commitment to more than 600 million since it was formed JDRF gives
more
money directly to diabetes research than any other private health agency in
the world

Thank you for your faith in me to complete this important Walk to find a
cure for Juvenile Diabetes There is a cure, and together we can find it

Sincerely,

John Doe

A letter from a teacher to parents:
January 1, 2006

Dear Parents,

Your child has had a crash course in diabetes management this year A
classmate of theirs, John, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last October,
and weve all learned a lot about the disease and what its like to live
with diabetes every day

Maybe your son or daughter hasnt told you, but children and adults living
with diabetes must prick their fingers multiple times daily to check their
blood sugar levels, and they must give themselves multiple daily insulin
shots John and his family talked to our class shortly after he was
diagnosed, so that your child and the rest of the class would be sensitive
to his situation We have helped him manage his highs and lows, but I
know that that is
not enough

Its for that reason that I want to participate in the Walk to Cure
Diabetes to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Im hoping
that you and your family will join me in raising funds to find a cure for
John and the other 18 million Americans who have diabetes

Well be walking with other DC area residents on May 7, 2006, on the
National Mall It will be a fun family day, and I hope youll bring your
children, neighbors, dogs, and of course - funds for diabetes research
Please look over the information in the enclosed brochure and let us know
if youll be joining us by sending the registration form to school with
your child by April 1 If you have any questions, please call me at 703

Dear XX;

On May 7, 2006, I will be walking with the COMPANY NAME team in the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk To Cure Diabetes on the National

will join us by doing one of the following:

Take A Leadership Role: Form your own team within your company Simply
designate a Team Captains, set a goal, recruit walkers, collect
pledges, and
then join us on September 17th
Make A Corporate Contribution: Support our team and write a check payable
to JDRF and mail it to me
Walk With Me On My Team: Collect pledges, get a T-shirt, come share the
camaraderie, and feel great in knowing that you helped save a life

I am sure that you get solicited by several non-profit organizations each
year, just as I do However, in May I attended a luncheon on behalf of the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and was truly impressed by the
organization and its cause

Thanks in part to JDRF, researchers feel that a cure IS in sight Much of
the groundbreaking research that has been conducted has been funded by the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation In fact, JDRF is the largest private
funder of diabetes research in the world And, out of every dollar JDRF
raises, more than an impressive 85 cents is channeled directly into
diabetes research and education projects

The JDRF Capitol Chapters goal is to raise 1 million for diabetes
research Based on JDRFs history - I am sure that they will reach, if not
exceed, this impressive goal

I sincerely hope that you will join me and help us reach our ultimate goal
- A WORLD WITHOUT DIABETES

T-SHIRT SPONSOR REQUEST

Mrs Lady Person
Company Company
15 Address Of Street
City, State ZIP

Dear Mrs Person:

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is the Capitol Chapters largest fundraising
event, with more than 5,000 walkers raising 11 million last year - and
our family alone raised 1,500 We set our goals even higher this year -
3,000 - and we hope that Company Company will support us

We would like to invite Company Company to sponsor Tinys Team Walk T-
shirts Each of the 20 members of Tinys Team - both tiny and full grown -
will wear a customized T-shirt featuring Tinys face and the message
Little Things Mean A Lot - Tinys Team Walks to Cure
Diabetes 2005 In
exchange for a 500 donation, wed place Company Companys logo on the
back Our team will take a team picture looking over our shoulders and send
it to you after we complete the Walk

The reason we participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes is because of my
daughter, Tiny She has lived with type 1, or juvenile, diabetes for two
years, and shes now nine years old She tells me that going to the Walk is
fun, and that it gives her hope that there will be a cure for her We all
work very hard to make sure that we manage her diabetes carefully, and that
long-term complications will never affect her She wears her 2005 Tinys
Team T-shirt all the time and is already working on a design for the 2006
shirt

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, the worlds
leading nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of diabetes research, was founded
in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes - a disease which
strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and
carries the constant threat of devastating complications Their mission is
constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the
support of research JDRF has 125 chapters
and affiliates worldwide, which
have helped to raise more than 800 million for diabetes research

Wont you support Tinys Team by donating 500 for the cost of our T-shirt
printing? Little things really do mean a lot, and we hope that youll have
our backs on May 7, 2006

If you have any questions, please call me at 202 465-4114 Thank you for
your consideration
