A Message from Minister McLean on World Diabetes Day
While Caymans focus remains on recovering from Ivans impact we should not
forget to pay attention to our health One disease which greatly impacted
the worlds health is diabetes It currently affects 194 million people
worldwide and the International Diabetes Federation predicts that this will
increase to 333 million by 2025
This year the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health
Organization have created a global campaign to combat one of the major risk
factors for diabetes: obesity The campaign slogan for World Diabetes Day
on 14 November is Fight Obesity - Prevent Diabetes
Though the Cayman Islands has a relatively small population, the incidence
of diabetes here is cause for concern It is important for
Cayman to join
the worldwide fight to combat diabetes by reducing obesity While the
stress caused by Ivan has helped many to lose a little weight, we should
not be complacent; maintaining a balanced diet and exercise are the two
main weapons that can be used to fight this disease
If you have diabetes, early screening can detect the disease and you can
learn to control it During the week of 15-20 November the Cayman Islands
Public Health Department will be conducting a free diabetes screening
programme at the three major grocery stores and at health centres I urge
everyone to take advantage of these screenings and take the first steps
towards better health
Government is doing its part to ensure that everyone in Cayman has access
to affordable health care The health and welfare of our people are my
most important concern, especially in these challenging times As Minister
of Health Services, I will do all I can to support the promotion of good
health through our education and prevention programmes
However, each individual must take responsibility for his or her health
Take the time to get tested for diabetes and make some positive changes to
improve your health Help restore
Cayman by restoring your own health
first
Together we can achieve the objective of the National Strategic Plan that
is to reduce the onset of lifestyle-related diseases by twenty-five percent
by 2008 This includes diabetes, obesity, and hypertension
