Summer Camps Help Children Cope with Diabetes

Kids and teens with diabetes are invited along with their parents to Summer
Camps presented by Southeastern Diabetes Education Services SDES
Campers learn practical skills to better manage diabetes and enjoy making
new friends with the same goals The overnight, day or family camps include
activities like boating, swimming, horseback riding and team sports

One of the summer camps for youth with diabetes is Camp Seale Harris on
Lake Martin near Jacksons Gap This summer residential program is the
cornerstone of the SDES organization Participants learn to obtain greater
independence over their lives and how to successfully manage their
diabetes The Senior Camp is June 3-9 and is for ages 13-17 The Junior
Camp is June 10-15 for children 6-12 SDES is an active member of Health
Committee of
the Alabama Black Belt Action Commission They are working
together to increase the awareness of SDES programs among citizens from
Alabamas Black Belt region

All camps are staffed by doctors, nurses and diabetes educators who make
learning fun Fees are determined by family income and scholarships are
available

Terry Ackley, Executive Director of Southeastern Diabetes Education
Services, said the Black Belt Action Commissions health committee has
helped bring awareness to the camp and diabetes The Health Committees
Diabetes Working Group strives to identify children having diabetes and
assist them in making application to Camp Seale Harris, where they may go
to learn about living with their diabetes, Ackley said

Chad Nichols, Project Manager of the Health Committee of the Governors
Black Belt Action Commission said, Southeastern Diabetes Education
Services is a tremendous asset to children with diabetes in our state
They provide a healthy way for these kids to learn more about living with
diabetes while building relationships with other children facing similar
challenges

SDES is a 501C 3 non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to
motivate persons with diabetes and
their families through educational,
social, and recreational experiences in a safe and nurturing environment
