I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 11 and had struggled with every shot until I spent my summer with AYUDA at Campo Amigo Ecuador In trying to be a good role model for my campers, my own
management improved tremendously AYUDA taught me how important it is to care for my diabetes and how lucky I am to have the resources available to do so I now accept diabetes as a part of my life and am able to control it without it controlling me

Sofias story
Sofia was born in Ecuador and diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 8 She was
one of the first campers to attend the AYUDA-sponsored Campo Amigo Ecuador, and over the years, has gone from being a camper to a counselor to a camp director Sofia is now a role model for other youth with diabetes

I think it is very important for young kids with diabetes to have role models Since many counselors at camp have diabetes as I do, campers see us as good examples and want to be like us when they grow up: controlling their diabetes, helping others, and living happier and healthier lives with their diabetes This works because it motivates campers to be in good control of their own diabetes throughout the year
