2525 Holly Hall, Suite 187 E, Houston, Texas 77054 Tel: 7135666588 Fax: 7135666578 DAEC is a five-year joint project of the Harris County Hospital District and the Asian American Health Coalition, funded by the Diabetes Program, Texas Department of Health in 1998 DAECs main goal is to assess the incidence of diabetes among individuals of Asian descent, develop appropriate cultural and linguistic educational materials, increase diabetes awareness, and help the community prevent and control the disease Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Americans and accounts for 98 billion in direct and indirect medical costs and lost productivity each year An estimated 100-120 million people worldwide have diabetes; nearly 800,000 new diabetes cases are diagnosed each year Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, amputation, blindness, heart attack, and stroke However, the result of a telephone survey and focus group study conducted by DAEC indicated there was a lack of understanding about diabetes, including risk factor, sign and symptom, management, way to seek help, etc in the community of Asian descent
About 1 out of 3 people with diabetes know little about the disease To promote healthy eating, DAEC created a culturally and linguistically appropriate Diabetes and Nutrition Handbook and food guide pyramid magnet in Vietnamese and Mandarin Chinese The handbook and magnet contain information about diabetes and healthy eating habits
