The costs of medical care for diabetes are rising rapidly The International Diabetes Federation estimates that, in its Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Region, expenditures for medical care caused by diabetes will double from about 10 billion International Dollars ID in 2007 to about 20 billion in 2025, NOT including price growth due to inflation This is only medical care directly caused by diabetes: expenditures for all the care consumed by persons with diabetes are and will be higher However, the larger costs of diabetes are not from medical care They come instead from premature death, disability while alive, and lost economic growth Good figures are not available for the MENA region and situations vary country-to-country But in China, for instance, the World Health Organization estimates that half a trillion dollars of economic growth will be lost over the 2005-2014 period due to premature mortality, alone, from diabetes and other cardiovascular disease This kind of economic loss is tragic–or rather, a great opportunity, because the costly
complications, mortality and disability of diabetes can be prevented using very simple, inexpensive treatments
