Diabetes
Diabetes is the bodys inability to use insulin appropriately, according to the American Diabetes Association
In the US, 208 million people–or 7 percent of the population–have diabetes The cause is still a mystery but environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise as well as genetic factors play a part Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar It is a myth that may have developed from the fact that in the past people with diabetes were not allowed to have any sugar in their diets, which is no longer an acceptable practice by professionals All foods in moderation may be taken into account when planning the diet Emphasis should be placed on an increase in vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, and lean meats in proportionate amounts People with diabetes may have to take one or more medications, including insulin Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune disorder in which specialized cells called beta cells are destroyed leading to diabetes symptoms In a nondiabetic, beta cells in the pancreas make insulin–a hormone that allows the body to use energy glucose from food While there currently isnt a cure for type 1 diabetes, there are several new
treatments under investigation such as pancreas transplants and beta cells transplants In type 2 diabetes, insulin is usually still present and levels are often higher in the blood than nondiabetics; however, the insulin in the blood is not as effective as it needs to be due to hormonal changes in those who lead sedentary lifestyles Some people with type 2 diabetes may be able to keep their blood sugar under control by making lifestyle changes involving weight loss, changes in diet, and an increase in exercise Exercise may actually be more important than anything else to promote effective control of blood sugar Gestational Diabetes may occur when a woman is pregnant; however, this type of diabetes is usually reversible Diabetes symptoms include: Frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision If diabetes is not properly taken care of, hyperglycemia high blood sugar becomes a strain on
the body and can cause problems later on Some diabetes complications may include:
Neuropathy–nerve damage Retinopathy–eye damage Nephropathy–kidney disease or failure Heart disease–more common in people with
diabetes due to their incidence of high blood pressure and cholesterol levels
