Dear Parent/Guardian,
Hello, my name is Alexandra Azzolino, I am in the 9th grade, and I am
a current student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School Three years
ago, I organized a foundation called Kids Kount to help kids who have
terminal illnesses, such as AIDS, cancer, and diabetes One way Kids Kount
raises money is through summer read-a-thons
In the summer of 2002, our first year raising money, we raised over
1,200 with only 10 readers These donations were given to the Elizabeth
Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is a leading non-
profit organization dedicated to pediatric AIDS It has received an A
rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and works hard to ensure
that as much money as possible goes to the research, education, and
outreach programs
In the summer of 2003, we had 42 readers and raised over 10,200
Because we raised so much money, the donations were split among three
different organizations One for each disease: AIDS, cancer, and
diabetes The donations went to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS
Foundation, St Jude Childrens Research Center, and the Joslin Diabetes
Center
This past summer, we had only 15 readers and raised 4,300 Combined
with the money raised from our Hit-a-thon, we had around 10,000 raised -
enough to donate to the same three organizations as 2003: the Elizabeth
Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, St Jude Childrens Research Center, and
the Joslin Diabetes Center These organizations are well-known for their
work on pediatrics If you have any questions or concerns, visit their
websites at wwwpedaidsorg; wwwjoslinharvardedu/highhopes; or
wwwstjudeorg
If your child would like to read for this wonderful cause and help
kids in need, please register on this website or email me at alex@kids-
kountorg
The read-a-thon concept is not hard to understand All your child
will have to do is read over the summer books read to the younger
children also count and gather friends and family members sponsors to
pledge a donation per book read
If your child decides to participate, you, as a parent, might need
to explain to them the rules of a read-a-thon Your child might also need
help talking to and gathering their sponsors To help you with this, there
is a script online, appropriate for each grade level, that they can use in
order to
gather sponsors You may still want to help younger students with
this part, though
On this website, you will find several things First, you will find
a handout explaining what Kids Kount is, how to help, and how to contact
me Also included in this package is the script referenced above It has
three different ways to gather sponsors, based on the childs grade Use
whatever is appropriate for your childs grade level Lastly, you will
find organization sheets to keep track of sponsors and books read Again,
these are classified by grade Depending on your grade level, the spaces
are bigger or smaller
I hope you and your child decide to participate in Kids Kounts 2005
Summer Read-a-thon I think your efforts will go to a great cause and your
child will be helping other children in need
Thank you,
Alexandra Azzolino, Founder
