We are all familiar with heart disease risks such as smoking, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and inactivity Recently, a study published in the journal, Circulation, found people who drink soda every day are 44 percent more likely to develop an array of conditions that alter metabolism and increase their health risks The truly surprising result was that it didnt matter whether the soda was a diet
version or regular The results were unexpected since even a little soda increased the risk and because diet drinks, with their lack of calories, had the same effect as sugary beverages, the researchers said Soda drinkers fared worse on the individual components of the condition known as metabolic syndrome, including high blood sugar, low levels of good

cholesterol, abdominal fat and elevated triglycerides Having metabolic syndrome approximately doubles your risk of heart attack or stroke, reports the senior author of the study Drinking one soft drink a day increases that risk This is not an association that can be good The researchers, from the Framingham Heart Study, have followed people in the Boston area for decades looking for lifestyle and other factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease They analyzed data from more than 6,000 people who filled out food questionnaires and were followed for an average of four years to gauge the impact of their soft drink consumption habits on health By the end of four years, the consumers of soft drinks had a 31 greater risk of becoming obese, a 30 greater risk of increased waist circumference and a 32 greater Continued on page

Soft Drinks: A Risk for Heart Disease?
Continued from page 1 risk of having low levels of HDL or socalled good cholesterol They also had a 25 higher risk of having high blood triglycerides or high blood glucose The researchers said they arent entirely sure how diet soft drinks, with no calories, increased the risks While soda drinkers, in general, do consume more fried foods and more calories, tend to exercise less, smoke more and eat less fiber and dairy products, the researchers took all those factors into account Even adjusting for them, soft drinks were linked to greater risk There are several hypotheses for how and why soda may lead to health problems The high fructose corn syrup can lead to weight gain and
resistance to insulin, which converts blood sugar to energy The fact that diet sodas were implicated made the researchers look for other possibilities People who consume a lot of liquids may not reduce their subsequent caloric intake, as was addressed in

our last newsletter The sweetness of both regular and diet beverages may lead to cravings for
other sweets, the researchers said The caramel in both drinks may promote inflammation and insulin resistance, they said Some experimental studies show that the caramel content in soft drinks may promote development of complex sugars that can result in insulin resistance and diabetes Is there a safe amount of soda? We cannot really answer that question, the lead researcher says The research shows an association between soda consumption and metabolic syndrome risk but not cause and effect More study is needed Still, he adds, the group without risk drank less than one soda a day The American Heart Association, in its July 23, 2007 press release on the study, states: Since this is an

observational study, it is important to note that the study does not show that soft drinks cause risk factors for heart disease AHA adds: Diet soda can be a good option to replace caloric beverages that do not contain important vitamins and minerals The American Heart Association supports dietary patterns that include low calorie beverages like water, diet soft drinks, and fat-free or lowfat milk as better choices than full calorie soft drinks The article was published in the July 31, 2007 issue of the
American Heart Associations journal Circulation This CDEs thoughts: Be active, eat well and enjoy your diet soda in moderation And, if caramel is the problem, there are some soft drinks that have none listed in their ingredient lists

Dont Skip Meals

by Mary Leighton, RN, BSN, CDE Why do dietitians always try to get you to eat three meals per day? When someone eats only one or two meals a day, the body learns to store extra fat for quick release to enable survival when food intake is not consistent The most accessible
storage space is the abdomen Therefore, eating one time per day high abdominal fat stores During long hours of sleep, large abdominal fat stores can easily raise circulating free fatty acid and triglyceride levels in the blood Higher free fatty acid levels raise insulin resistance and accerate damage to blood vessels In contrast, by eating reasonable amounts of complex, low glycemic index carbohydrates through the day, you help minimize fat release into the blood and assist weight maintenance A healthy nibbling diet helps lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels, and keeps the glucose in better control 7

of the Midlands

BD Safe Clip The BD Safe-Clip is a needle clipping and storage device that works with insulin
syringe and pen needles The clipped needle is automatically and safely retained within the device It holds up to 1,500 clipped needles The BD Safe-Clip is 4 long and 1 wide Fits in pocket or purse 450

by Justyna Tesmer Did you know that every state has different regulations regarding the disposal of household medical waste? It is estimated that 3 billion syringes are used each year outside health care facilities After being used and discarded, most of these syringes end up in the public solid waste system This presents a risk of needlestick injury and infection to anyone who comes in contact with the waste Learning the proper disposal is the only way to help alleviate this problem Nebraska Guidelines Place the waste in a rigid or semirigid, puncture resistant and leakproof container Mark the container prominently with the universal biohazard symbol Label the container Infectious Waste or biohazard waste Seal the container Ensure that the outside of the container is free from contamination Take container to a needle disposal program or contact your physicians office if a disposal program is not available in your area Under the Sink has a needle disposal program available free
for residents of Douglas and Sarpy counties They can be contacted at 444-SINK 7465 for more information and to schedule an appointment Iowa GuidelinesThe Iowa Department of Natural Resources has not written guidance on safe disposal of used syringes Individuals are advised to contact local solid waste authorities for safe syringe disposal procedures However, it is advisable to follow the Nebraska disposal guidelines and take them to a needle disposal program The Council Bluffs Health Department at City Hall has a needle disposal program available for residents of Iowa It is located at 209 Pearl Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa in the Basement of City Hall No appointments are necessary; they are open Mon-Friday from 8-12 and 1-5 A disposal container is provided for you; once it is full you can drop it off to receive another disposal container To locate information about another state check the web: wwwsafeneedledisposal org
