SACDE History
We began in August 1974 when twelve dietitians and nurses decided to form
an organization– the Tucson Diabetes Educators Council in order to meet
their professional needs by:
Sharing experiences
Exchanging professional information
Establishing a network of interested and involved health
professionals
Arranging for professional seminars in the Tucson area
These educators helped newly diagnosed people with diabetes meet others who
had successfully coped with diabetes for many years Diabetes classes were
conducted in
English and Spanish
In 1987, we became known as the Southern Arizona Chapter of Diabetes
Educators SACDE affiliated with American Association of Diabetes
Educators AADE In 1989, SACDE was honored to receive the Chapter of the
Year Award from AADE
The SACDE summer sports camp for children with diabetes evolved into the
SACDE Family Weekend
Our School Nurse Program has grown into a Caregiver Program for school
personnel and any caregiver of a child with diabetes
We developed a website in 2005 to enhance communications among our members
