Dear Educators,
Just like it takes schooling and practice to learn the multiplication tables, it takes education and time to understand the medical needs of children with diabetes i am really excited to be working with arthur and his friends to help teachers and students learn more about diabetes in children
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body either does not make enough insulin or is unable to use insulin effectively Insulin is a hormone produced by special cells in the
pancreas called beta cells Insulin allows the body to use sugar, or glucose, contained in the foods we eat Without both insulin and glucose, the body does not have an energy source for growth and daily activity There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2 In type 1 diabetes, the bodys immune system destroys the beta cells, leaving the body without any insulin People with type 1 diabetes need to inject insulin to live Type 2 diabetes can develop from a combination of factors, such as obesity, inactivity, and aging People with type 2 diabetes may also require insulin but can often be treated with careful attention to diet and exercise, as well as with diabetes pills About 90 of children with diabetes have type 1 diabetes However, the epidemic of childhood obesity has led to increasing numbers of children with type 2 diabetes
Caring for diabetes
Successful diabetes management includes: The school Food planning with a balanced, healthy combination of meals and snacks is a vital part Carbohydrate counting is a tool that many families find useful of the Physical activity and exercise Diabetes Team Monitoring for symptoms of high or low blood glucose High blood glucose can
cause increased urination and thirst Low blood glucose can lead to shakiness, hunger, irritability, confusion, or even loss of consciousness Drinking a sugary liquid, like juice, treats a low blood glucose Checking blood glucose levels and taking insulin or other diabetes medication as needed Education from the healthcare team and support from family members, schools, and the community
supporting children with diabetes in school
Diabetes is not a do-it-yourself condition at any age, but especially not for children Successful management involves the family and school working together with the healthcare team While it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a team to help care for a child with diabetes With education and support, teachers, school nurses, and other school personnel can learn to recognize possible symptoms of diabetes and help make school a safe, inclusive environment for students with diabetes and their families The Diabetes Resources listed in the sidebar on page 3 offer important basic information I encourage you to make use of these resources and share them with your colleagues
sincerely,
