Preparing for this major event, and managing the continuous flow of support and interest since then, has reminded me once again of the strength and solidarity of the diabetes community when we unite
behind common goals While we all may have different backgrounds, work with different populations and have different ideas of the best way to tackle the diabetes crisis in America, at the end of the day we know that we are strongest when we work together As an organization with the mission of convening those stakeholders and acting as a catalyst for change, I couldnt be prouder of NCDP and its partners for the progress weve made If you would like to learn more about the National Diabetes Goal and its Champions, please visit NationalDiabetesGoalcom Sincerely,

NCDP Releases Findings of Societal Barometer at Launch of Series
On May 7, the National Changing Diabetes Program hosted an event at the Newseum in Washington, DC, to launch its National Triple Diabetes Barometer series Research findings from the Societal Barometer the first in the series were announced at the event, along with the introduction of a National Diabetes Goal Nearly 100 people representing government, business and health care attended the event Kevin McConville of Gallup announced the results of the national public opinion survey commissioned by NCDP
The survey showed that more than 90 of Americans consider diabetes a serious health issue, and showed that one in four adults has been diagnosed by a physician as having diabetes or as being at-risk for diabetes Another 47 of adults report feeling they could be at risk for diabetes, even though they have not been diagnosed The keynote speaker for the event was former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who shared his personal and legislative experience with diabetes and expressed encouragement to individuals to take control of their health US Representative Jay Inslee also addressed the audience of community leaders and health care professionals by describing the importance of legislation to support federal coordination for diabetes resources Maria Menounos, correspondent for The Today Show and ambassador for the Entertainment Industry Foundations Diabetes Aware program, was present to tell her familys story of living with diabetes and to reiterate the need for legislation to promote coordination of federal diabetes programs

National Changing Diabetes Program Measures Diabetes Awareness with New Survey
The growing diabetes epidemic is among the most significant health issues facing the United States today Unfortunately, it is also a problem that often goes unnoticed until it is too late Currently, nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes and each year, more than 15 million more are diagnosed with it An estimated 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes So why is diabetes consistently overlooked as a serious disease? In attempt to help answer that question, Novo Nordisks National Changing Diabetes Program commissioned a national public opinion survey
on diabetes knowledge and perceptions in America Conducted by Gallup, Diabetes in America: Public Knowledge, Perceptions and Behaviors, reveals a how society views diabetes in terms of its seriousness and the risk factors that can cause it The survey is the basis of NCDPs Societal Barometer, the first in a three-part National Triple Diabetes Barometer series that will measure the current state of diabetes in the United States from societal, clinical and economic perspectives The phone survey was conducted in summer 2007, and contains information obtained from a randomly selected sample of 2,015 American adults Among the key findings, the survey reveals that the public generally understands what diabetes is, who it impacts and that it is largely preventable This awareness, however, does not always lead to action The survey shows that one in four adults has reported being diagnosed with diabetes or at high-risk for the disease According to the findings, 94 of adults consider diabetes to be serious or very serious, and a majority of the population believes it to be more serious than or as serious as heart disease, stroke, cancer and AIDS More than 8 in 10 Americans believe diabetes is
largely preventable 83 and more than 9 in 10 indicate there are things individuals can to do prevent diabetes 92 Despite high general awareness, diabetes knowledge gaps remain and existing awareness and knowledge does not always translate to needed behavior change The majority of adults surveyed report being tested for diabetes, yet 71 of them could not recall the name of the test, and only 20 had some basic idea of what was being tested Four in 10 who are actually at-risk think that they are unlikely to develop the disease Close to 6 in 10 report being overweight and despite many having received guidance about eating healthy, there is a gap between actual behavior and what people say theyre doing In response to this knowledge gap, the National Changing Diabetes Program and nearly 20 other organizations announced their support for the National Diabetes Goal at the Societal Barometer launch event on May 7 The goal, which is to ensure that by 2015, 45 of Americans who are at risk for type 2 diabetes know their bloodglucose level and what actions to take, is being supported by numerous organizations including the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical
Endocrinologists, American Association of Diabetes Educators, American College of Physicians, National Business Coalition on Health, Revolution Health and many others The full Gallup study, Diabetes in America: Public Knowledge, Perceptions and Behaviors, is available online for personal or organizational use For more information on the study findings, please visit NCDPcom

Health, Business and Community Leaders Unite Support of National Diabetes Goal
The National Diabetes Goal, a new effort to unite organizations and resources toward reversing the upward trend of diabetes, was announced at the NCDP Barometer launch event on May 7 by Stewart Perry, chair of the American Diabetes Association The goal calls for all sectors of society to work together so that by the year 2015, 45 of Americans at-risk for type 2 diabetes will know their blood glucose level and know the appropriate steps to take in order to prevent or manage their diabetes NCDP and Novo Nordisk were joined at the event by other national leaders in health care, business, government and education Champions for the National Diabetes Goal recognize that the diabetes crisis takes a major social and economic toll on the
United States, but also recognize that there are simple steps that can have a profound difference If current diabetes trends continue, an estimated 50 million people will suffer from diabetes by 2025 The first step to reversing current trends is for those at risk for type 2 diabetes to get tested, learn their blood glucose level, and learn the appropriate actions to take The following organizations endorse the National Diabetes Goal: American Academy of Physician Assistants American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy American Association of Diabetes Educators American Diabetes Association American Medical Group Association American Medical ID American Optometric Association Barton HealthCare System Campaign to End Obesity Center for Health Transformation Entertainment Industry Foundation ESSENCE Food Marketing Institute National Association of Chain Drug Stores National Association of School Nurses National Business Coalition on Health National Minority Quality Forum Novo Nordisk Patient Assistance Revolution Health

During an interview on Fox and Friends prior to the goal announcement, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee
discussed the goal and the need for a shared focus within the diabetes community The National Diabetes Goal is supported by an online resource that outlines the background and purpose of the goal and provides tips for manageable, easy-to-understand steps that Americans can achieve to take control of their health For more information, please visit NationalDiabetesGoalcom To see photos from the May 7 event, view video clips of the speakers or read the full transcript of Governor Huckabees keynote address, please visit NCDPcom
