BARTON CENTER TO UTILIZE NEW PROGRAM
TO HELP CAMPERS LIVE BETTER WITH DIABETES
NORTH OXFORD, Mass, June 29, 2006 - The Barton Center for Diabetes
Education, one of the countrys premier diabetes organizations, announced
its adoption of Balance Stretch, an innovative program designed to help
people live better with diabetes The program will be introduced to
attendees of Barton Summer Camp, beginning June 25
The foundation of the program is two five-pointed stars, each of which is
comprised of the various elements that people with diabetes should balance
and
manage for improved health and an enhanced life:
For Health: Food, Exercise, Sleep, Stress, Insulin
For Life: Work/School, Family, Personal Growth, Community Service,
Faith
The program teaches children with diabetes to balance the critical
components of health and life It also instructs them to stretch their
limits to achieve personal growth and reach out to help others achieve
their potential The program was developed by The Balance Stretch
Center, a non-profit diabetes support organization
Balance Stretch is a unique program in so many ways, said John Maconga,
president of The Barton Center Most of all, it is the first program we
know of that incorporates so many aspects of life, health and community
into one plan for overall diabetes management
An integral part of the program will be a Balance Stretch Day Planner
developed by The Balance Stretch Center, The Elliott P Joslin Camp in
Charlton, Mass, and The Barton Center for tracking diabetes management and
other measures of overall health and wellness This tool, which will be
produced by the MeadWestvaco Corporation under the co-branded name of
Balance Stretch and AT-A-GLANCE, is modeled after the
popular planners
used by many business people but will be specifically geared to people with
diabetes especially children, allowing them to track their daily food
intake, insulin, activities and more
AT-A-GLANCE is donating a one-month planner package to all Summer 2006
Barton campers includes hip pack, planner, information booklet and
calculator Planner refills will be available for purchase at the end of
the camp session
The Barton Center has been at the forefront of innovative diabetes
programs, as evidenced by its introduction last year of Learn, Laugh,
Live, its own multi-disciplinary program offering medical, social, and
emotional instruction and support to people recently diagnosed with
diabetes
ABOUT THE BARTON CENTER
The Barton Center for Diabetes Education is the largest, independent
camping and educational program in the country dedicated to children who
live with diabetes and the people who care for them Some 1,500 children
and their families participate in our programs annually, including the
Clara Barton resident camp, Adventure Programs, Family Programs, and Day
Camps in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts The Clara Barton
Birthplace Museum is co-located on
the grounds of The Barton Center

AYUDA Launches the DELTA Program to Support Diabetes Community in Belize

After conducting an in-depth analysis and needs assessment of the local
diabetes community in Belize, AYUDA initiated the Diabetes Education
Leadership Training and Advocacy DELTA Program from July 9-13th in Belize
City, Belize in partnership with the local diabetes community The program
was considered a remarkable success as it represented the first ever
diabetes leadership program in Belize DELTA attracted over 25 youth with
diabetes, three local medical professionals and six AYUDA representatives
The three day camp focused on the encouragement and promotion of active
youth involvement in the system that their lives depend upon The
objectives of DELTA included: empowering and training youth to better
manage their diabetes and take a leadership role in the diabetes community,
and transforming the Belizean diabetes community by strengthening and
building the capacity of the
Belizean diabetes community Additionally the
program looked to increase the awareness of the Belizean diabetes community
among various local non-governmental organizations, private sector partners
and media outlets

Diabetes is an enormously common condition in Belize and has serious impact
on the healthcare system Non-communicable diseases, in particular
diabetes and cardiovascular disease, accounted for over 30 of all
mortality from 1993-1996 In 2003, diabetes was ranked sixth among the ten
leading causes of mortality in Belize

AYUDA plans to continue to support the DELTA program in Belize in the
coming year and will be looking for possible volunteers to participate in
the program in 2007 Also, AYUDA welcomes the support from any DECA camp
that wishes to sponsor an exchange with Belizean youth For more
information please contact Merith Basey at mbasey@ayudaincnet

AYUDAs Campo Amigo Ecuador Celebrates its 7th Anniversary with a
Remarkable Volunteer Team

AYUDA is currently in the midst of
planning the 7th annual Campo Amigo
Ecuador CAE program CAE aims to provide a supportive, educational and
fun environment where children living with diabetes are brought together to
learn how to care for their diabetes as well as develop lasting friendships
and valuable mentors Furthermore, CAE serves to link children,
adolescents, and their families to the local diabetes association in
Ecuador, Fundacion Diabetes Juvenil Ecuador, for continued support
throughout the year

AYUDAs annual diabetes camp in Ecuador will be held this year in Quito,
Ecuador from August 13th-19th, 2006 This year 18 new international
volunteers and 17 return volunteers will join the team of Ecuadorian staff
for the staff leadership training program to focus on team building,
understanding camp protocols, and improving leadership abilities The
Ecuadorian team will consist of 19 youth leaders most with diabetes
themselves and alumni of the program, three Ecuadorian endocrinologists,
and eight Ecuadorian medical students The fundamental success of CAE will
rely heavily on the preparedness of these youth

This years team of volunteers represents the most selective and
diverse
group of volunteers that AYUDA has complied over the last 10 years With
veteran campers and staff from Iowas Camp Hertko Hollow, Massachusetts
Clara Barton Camp and Arizonas Phoenix Diabetes Camp, the team is not
short on experience and innovative ideas Other notable diabetes advocates
of the volunteer team include Fran Kaufman, MD -Director, Childrens
Hospital Los Angeles Comprehensive Childhood Diabetes Center; Debbie Jones,
RN, CDE- Chair, North America Region, International Diabetes Federation;
Barry Conrad, CN, CDE from Stanford University Hospital and multiple
representatives from the diabetes communities throughout South America
AYUDA looks forward to continuing to work with and train volunteers from
other DECA diabetes camps in the years to come

diabetes camps around the world If your camp has left over
medical/diabetes supplies from camp this year and would like to collaborate
with AYUDA in supporting international diabetes camps, please contact Nick
Cuttriss at ncuttriss@ayudaincnet

alone and that they can manage it I Have Diabetes Too is an informative
and positive look at kids with diabetes It features them enjoying all
types of fun activities, talking about life with diabetes and performing
standard blood testing procedures This is not a clinical or technical
educational video and is best used after the child is familiar with
injections, blood testing, inhalers and other aspects of management Its
an especially helpful video for all families with children who have
diabetes, as well as for schools, pediatricians, healthcare organizations
and diabetes support groups This video also is appropriate as a general
health education tool to foster a better understanding of kids with
