Coping with your diabetes can be difficult during times of unexpected
events The loss of electricity for a few hours can make it difficult to
manage your diabetes You and your family need to plan and prepare
MEDICAL SUPPLIES
Be prepared by storing the following supplies in a plastic box/bag that is
ready to go:
1 Alcohol swabs
2 Blood sugar meter machine
3 Glugacon emergency kit
4 Hard candies, can of regular soda or glucose tablets
5 Insulated bag for diabetes supplies if there is loss of
electricity
6 Lancets and lancet device
7 Medications you take daily in pill form
8 Sharps container or a small empty coffee can with lid
9 Strips to use with your meter
10 Syringes and pen needles
FOOD SUPPLIES
During a disaster it may be difficult to get food supplies Keep the
following items in your box/bag:
1 1 pkg of unsweetened cereal 6 Cans of tuna,
chicken, nuts
2 2 packages of cheese and crackers 7 Manual can opener
3 4 liters of water for one week 8 Peanut butter
4 6 cans sugar free soda 9 Small box of powered milk
5 6 cans
light fruit 10 Unopened saltine
