Presidents Message
I attended my first AADE national convention in Washington, DC in 2005
and experienced a wonderful time networking with colleagues, running to
general sessions and seminars, attempting to see every single exhibit and
lugging home tons of literature I remember arising at 4am on the day of
the annual walk/run to participate in the run It was exhilarating
Returning this year to attend the 35th AADE national convention was
Great This time I participated as chapter president and attended the
Leadership meeting which provided a treasure of ideas gathered from
all the chapter presidents across our USA and I met the person behind the
name So there are many talented and hard working chapter presidents
I would like to give recognition to two of our TRIADE members who
presented at the 35th AADE annual meeting in Washington, DC:
Nadine Uplinger MS MHA RD CDE LDN presented DiaBEATes Nurse Champions
Nadines session discussed how
Albert Einstein Healthcare network improved
nursing staff diabetes knowledge and utilized Diabetes resource nurses to
provide better diabetes management and patient education
Gary Scheiner, MS CDE presented How to Actually MAKE Money Providing
Diabetes Education Gary provided a comprehensive session discussing how to
turn your diabetes program from a loss leader into a profit maker Content
ranged from tapping into new revenue streams to operating and marketing
costs Very interesting
Members who were unable to attend AADE 35th annual meeting
Do have the opportunity to purchase these and all sessions on CD format
from the AADE website
Also at this time I would like to again congratulate Nadine Uplinger
for her election to AADE vice-president I would also like to thank all
TRIADE members who supported her by voting

Legislative Message
The Legislative meeting was held Tuesday August 5th in Washington The
morning session provided information from Former Congressman Bob Franks
of
Winning Strategies Washington, Heather Foster, Legislative Assistant to
Congresswoman Diane DeGette, on how to approach the legislative aides of
our district Representatives Martha Rinker, AADE Chief Advocacy Officer,
addressed key Diabetes Issues, and left time for questions and answers
Role Playing: 3 different types of Congressional Meetings were
practiced Hill Visits Logistics were presented by Donna Mullins, Winning
Strategies Washington This consumed the morning sessions
After a short lunch everyone was on their way to the Hill where we
all met with our respected Congressional aides in multiple areas of the
Hill Everyone presented our experiences and needs of our diabetes
patients as well as our communities We requested our representatives to Co-
sponsor
HR 4218, Medicare Diabetes Self-Management Training Act of 2007 to
recognize CDEs as Medicare providers for purposed of outpatient diabetes
training services
My encounters were all well received and all were willing to
encourage the Congressmen to Co-sponsor HR 4218 However it is imperative
that all Diabetes Educators contact their own
district Congressmen/women to keep our request in the forefront and to
move
this Bill to the floor of the House You can contact your Representatives
by signing on to AADE web-site or wwwcongresscom

Carol Molfetta RD, CDE, - As an RD, CDE, I have been involved in
diabetes for over 20 years At the present, being semi-retired, I am the
coordinator and developer of a continuing medical education program, the
Diabetes Core Curriculum Workshop This is a comprehensive,
multidisciplinary diabetes update and study course for the CDE examination
It is offered twice per year before the CDE examination My goal is to
help diabetes
educators stay current on diabetes self-management training
so they in turn can help their patients manage diabetes So far my course
faculty and I have helped many hundreds of healthcare professionals pass
the CDE examination
PA is the area where I work on the behind-the-scenes work for the
course I have been doing the actual course at hotels in the Greater NY
City area The next one, October 13-16, 2009, will be at the Sheraton
LaGuardia East Hotel, Flushing, NY Not too far from the TRIADE area
I became intrigued with diabetes early in my career Since diabetes
affects the entire body, I believe if you know diabetes you know about all
other diseases As a healthcare professional this is important to me
Another very important reason is that the field of diabetes is
multidisciplinary I enjoy networking with colleagues who come from a
variety of healthcare disciplines I learn so much from them and I hope
vise a versa Diabetes has touched my family — my father had T2 as did my
mother-in-law
Before diabetes I did a lot of work as a Consultant Nutritionist with
school districts I worked on helping teachers integrate nutrition into
the school curriculum I
developed numerous in-service courses for
teachers some of which covered diabetes in the school age population This
was my first encounter working in diabetes I networked with many people
in the local ADA to research and present the material in my courses After
this I worked for the Suffolk County Department of Health as Public Health
Nutritionist and CDE In this role I contributed to developing its diabetes
program
I hope to continue to provide diabetes continuing medical education
courses Since I have recently moved to Reading, PA and joined TRIADE, I
look forward to meeting and networking with members
Sincerely,
Carol Molfetta

Mary Jane McDevitt RN BS CDE -
My name is Mary Jane McDevitt and I am the Program Coordinator at
Center for Diabetes, located at Springfield Hospital for the Crozer System
I have been in this position for 15 years I have been a CDE for 3
years
I have been an RN since 1975 and have worked in Oncology,
Management, Home Care and Hospice before deciding on Diabetic Education
My son Ryan was 3 y/o when diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes he is now
11 years old My daughter Megan was
diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the
age of 12 and is now 18 years old They have both been on insulin pumps for
the last 6-7 years
As you can see, due to my familys struggle with Diabetes, I have
developed a passion for Diabetes Education and Patient Advocacy
I am enjoying this position, working with 3 knowledgeable and
experienced CDEs and enjoyed the AADE conference this past August
Case Study
A 47-year-old woman with a past medical history of vitiligo and
Graves disease presented with late-onset type 1 diabetes For 2 yrs, she
had complained of progressive gait instability and oscillopsia
Neurological exam revealed multidirectional, horizontal rotatory fixation
and gaze nystagmus, gait ataxia and mild limb ataxia in the left upper arm
Imaging studies, electrophysiological studies, routine biological and
detailed immunological screening as well as a study of CSF were
performed
MRI showed cerebellar atrophy Routine biological screening was
normal Immunological screening showed for numerous antibodies Ab,
including GAD-Ab, thyroid peroxidase-Ab, thyroglobulin-Ab, 21-hydroxylase-
Ab, gastric parietal cell-Ab, and BM 1 ganglioside IgG-Ab
CSF was normal
Gad-Ab were in CSF, suggesting an autoimmune origin of the cerebellar
ataxia Treatment with IV immunoglobulin led to a slight improvement in
nystagmus and gait instability
Autoimmune cerebellar ataxia related to GAD-Ab is a rare condition
that typically affects women with late-onset type 1 diabetes or other
autoimmune disorders, including autoimmune polyendocrinopathy
