Diabetes
From front page health conditions such as heart disease and stroke have been decreasing for at least two decades, the number of diabetes cases has increased dramatically Although there is no known method of preventing Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by following h2us lifestyle recommendations Changes in your lifestyle, such as losing weight, eating a healthful diet and exercising, can help prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes Early detection and treatment of diabetes can help lower the risk of damage from its complications If you havent had any tests to determine your risk for diabetes, you will want to discuss doing so with your physician or other healthcare professional Do you know if you are at risk for developing diabetes? The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases NIDDK says that you are at increased risk of developing diabetes if: You are overweight You are over 45 You have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes Your family background is African American, American Indian, Asian

Vitamins Minerals A to Z
Iodine
In addition to vitamins, our bodies also need certain minerals to function properly The thyroid gland, located just above the middle of the collarbone, needs iodine to produce the thyroid hormone, which maintains normal metabolism in all cells of the body Principally found in sea water, dietary iodine can be scarce in many inland areas, and deficiencies were common before iodine was added to table salt Seafood and kelp contain very high levels of iodine, as do salty processed foods that use iodized salt Iodine deficiency
causes enlargement of the thyroid, a condition known as goiter However, be aware that if you are not deficient in iodine, taking extra iodine will not help your thyroid work better, and it might even cause problems The official US recommendation for daily intake of iodine for persons 14 years or older except for pregnant or nursing mothers is 150 mcg
