One lucky treadmill winner gets back on track to manage her diabetes Alexandria, VA May 18, 2007 To help encourage Americans to take more steps towards healthier lifestyle behaviors, the American Diabetes Association ADA and PCE Health Fitness joined together in March to develop a unique contest to emphasize the importance of regular physical activity in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and managing the disease In support of American Diabetes Alert Day ADAs annual call-to-action for Americans to know their risk for diabetes PCE Health Fitness donated a LifeSpan TR2000 treadmill signed by the hosts of ABCs hit show, The View During the month long contest, individuals who visited the ADAs Web site to take the online Diabetes Risk Test at diabetesorg/risktest had the opportunity to enter their name to win the signed treadmill Los Lunas, New Mexico resident, Eileen Jezercak, was the lucky winner Following her diagnosis with type 2 diabetes in 2000, Eileen, 50, researched and found the ADAs Web
site where she received important information about diabetes She has also been able to share her story and talk with others who have diabetes through ADAs online message boards When I was first diagnosed, I would not have had as much help if the ADA was not there, said Eileen In particular, the ADAs web site was a great place to help me get the needed information to understand diabetes and how eating right and exercising is so important in managing my diabetes more

Eileen understands the important role physical activit
y plays in managing diabetes Both her father and mother passed away from complications of diabetes, and her two sisters and brother are currently living with the disease Since her diagnosis, she has been doing her best to increase her physical activity to prevent
complications Having recently retired, she has been able to increase her exercise to one hour a day for at least 6 days a week This treadmill could not have come at a better time, said Eileen My treadmill does not work any longer and it is very difficult to exercise outside with the high winds and sands storms in New Mexico at this time of year Now, I can continue to keep my diabetes on track Eileens husband and children have also been very supportive and have joined her in learning about how to make better choices for healthy eating, including learning about nutritious food options and how to watch portion sizes Nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and approximately one third of them do not even know it Additionally, 54 million Americans have pre-diabetes, placing them at increased risk for developing the disease Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the United States and it has no cure The American Diabetes Association is the nations premier voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information and advocacy Founded in 1940, the Association has offices in every region of the country, providing services to
